If you’re anything like me, you want to replace your day job. You have one idea or maybe several and you feel this is the opportunity to replace your day job. I have the same thoughts. But, before you buy into that new program and plan on leaving your job in the next month, there are a few things you need to take into account.
For starters, there are very few opportunities out there that will replace your income in a year let alone a month. Secondly, you will never get there without a viable plan. Now, I am not going to be able to give you everything in this blog, but I can help you get off to the right start or at least point you in the right direction. Especially if you just came home from an awesome seminar that sold you on that plan that will allow you to not only leave your job, but also have the lifestyle you have only dreamed about.
Several years ago, I was in that place. I just came back from a seminar that had to do with Multi-level marketing and I was in another place. I couldn’t sleep from all the excitement and thought of not only never going back to work, but being able to live a life I only dreamed of. I couldn’t wait to get started and I had a list of things I was going to do when I made it big. That enthusiasm was short lived when things didn’t really go anywhere after about 12 months. I couldn’t understand why everyone seemed to be enjoying success and I was still at the same place. To make matters worse, I decided that my job was good enough, so after a couple of years and my marriage being truly tested, I called it quits. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t regret my mistakes. However, the best part of those mistakes is that I can learn from them, and so can you.
No matter what path you have decided to go down, there are some musts you have to incorporate if you are going to have a chance of succeeding. First, I am not here to take all the air out of your sail. The best part of seminars is that they will energize you to work on your business, but they may not give you a clear path to follow. The first thing you need to do when you leave a seminar or just listened to a great podcast is to do all the things you don’t want to do to get you closer to your goal. A recent article in Entrepreneur magazine discusses the realities of dreaming. In the article, the author is not convinced that dreaming will help you reach your goals. When I first read the article, I couldn’t have disagreed more with the author. Looking back at the article and my previous ventures, I can now see one of the major errors of my way. Each time I went to a seminar, I was fired up and knew this was going to be the year. But, in all those dreams I never truly incorporated all the obstacles I may or would have encountered.
I read an article in Entrepreneur magazine that talked about dreams and how they don’t ever take us to our goals. At first, I totally disagreed with the author, but after reading the article a few times and applying it to my position, I realized that this is the case. Dreams alone will not inspire you enough to accomplish your goals. Dreams are just the beginning. Katherine Paterson sums this up best, “A dream without a plan is just a wish”. This is not to say dreaming isn’t an integral part of accomplishing your goals, but they must incorporate all portions of your plan. For example, I have a dream one day of having a woodworking shop on a great piece of land that overlooks Mother Nature in all her beauty. Large windows span from the floor to the ceiling allowing sunlight to drench the large post and beam construction. What I need to incorporate into this dream is all the obstacles that are sure to stand in my way of seeing this become a reality. The dream is just the beginning of the plan.
