Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to be wealthy. I dreamed, and still do, of having a large mansion with every toy imaginable. About 15 years ago, I was introduced to multi-level marketing (MLM). The company was one of the founders of MLM’s so I attended a seminar. That evening the speaker dazzled us with all types of lifestyle dreams. “Imagine not having to go to work and having plenty of money to do what you want. Three of your favorite cars quietly tucked away in an oversize garage, with state of the art tools and glossy floors”. The point of all this is to get your mind to start imagining the real possibilities of being truly free and motivate you to do things you otherwise wouldn’t do. Then one day, the truth set in. You’ve gone to all these seminars, you paid a lot of money in materials, knocked on doors and talked to strangers. Your family wouldn’t even listen to you and your long lost Uncle is wondering why you are suddenly calling him. In just a few short months, your dreams are gone and you quit.
So why didn’t it work? It doesn’t matter if you are venturing into an MLM or some other type of business; money isn’t the motivator. The reality is that when you hit enough roadblocks, you will revert right back to what is making you money now. This is especially true for those of us who have full time jobs and take on a new venture part time like MLM. Once the going gets rough, your current paycheck is just fine. It takes a whole new seminar to get your mind back on track. The only problem is that you don’t have enough time and money to continually go to seminars.
I don’t believe money is a true motivator. Large sums of money are what they use to get you hooked, but the reality is that we rarely do anything great for money. Not to mention, if you already have a job, the minute you have had enough adversity, you will quit that new venture and just plug along at your nine to five. So if it’s not money, what is it? I believe it to be a passion to deliver a product or service. It’s this passion that keeps us going, especially when we hit obstacles. Main street media likes to glamorize wealthy or rich folks and they make it seem so easy. The reality is that all the passion and drive, all the late nights, restless nights and seemingly endless obstacles don’t sell on TV.
Take the time to educate yourself on some wealthy successful people and what you will almost always find is that the secret to success isn’t a secret, because they have written a book about it. More importantly, they followed their passions and dreams instead of the almighty dollar. The truth is that success always comes first, and then money follows it. Money is not the gauge of their success; it just seems that way. Their true success is measured in how much of an impact they have made and how many people they have helped. Think of Tiger Woods. Do you think he still trains, practices, travels, and plays in countless tournaments for the money? He’s worth millions. Why would he need to subject himself to countless hours on the driving range, several surgeries, and the resulting physical pain he likely endures? Is it for a purse the size of one-tenth his net worth? I don’t believe so.
The point is that if you are searching for that venture that will free you of your job, that venture has to be something you are or can get passionate for. The main reason I didn’t succeed in Multi-level Marketing is because I wasn’t passionate for the business. Lacking passion, I was never truly motivated in MLM, so when I hit enough adversity I quit. MLM produces some of the wealthiest people in this country, so there is no question the business works. The problem was me. It is no different than when a major franchise like a Wendy’s closes. Clearly that business model works, but for whatever reason the franchisee couldn’t make it work for them. Perhaps they chased that dream of having a lot of money and when they found out the hours involved to run the business, they realized a paycheck was a better option.
When you have figured out what you’re passionate about and have done enough research to start your own business, set some realistic and outrageous goals. Add pictures to these goals and pin them up in your office or somewhere you will see them every day and every night. Read them every morning and every night. Don’t stop until you have reached them. I assure you, if your motives are pure, once you achieve success, the money with such velocity you will never think about it again.
